Cards have been in use for centuries, anyone with a gift for sleight of hand could have invented the various tricks that we now take for granted – although many of them were codified in 1929 when the famous magician Blackstone first published his book Blackstone’s Modern Card Tricks.

But we do know when levitation or floating magic – the art of making it magically appear that someone was floating in midair – first came to the stages of the world. It was in England – during the 1800s – when conjurers and stage magicians of all types first got their start, and really reigned supreme until the 20t century and television started sucking away their audience.
